October 26th: Day of the Cafe

October 26th is Dia del Cafe Porteño (Porteño Coffee Store). The café is a “porteño” institution par excellence. This is the place where people can feel free at their ease, the perfect spot to dream with friends and find magical solutions to the country’s problems. It is here, better than another scenario, where people think that utopias are possible.

October 26th marks the day of the Cafe, commemorating that in 1894 the historic Café Tortoni opened on Avenida de Mayo 825.

A special celebration will be held at almost every coffe store in Buenos Aires: between 6pm and 8pm drink 4 coffees and pay only 2.

BA Underground Market: explore the flavours

An underground market is a one-day event that provides the opportunity for amateur chefs, artisanal food producers, and creators of amazing homemade food to sell to a hungry and receptive audience of local and expat foodies.

The philosophy of the market is to create a space for people who are un-certified – and therefore don’t have other options to sell their wares. The hope is that the market is a kind of incubator, helping people to raise capital, as well as gain support.

The next BA Underground Market will be on Saturday, 15th September at IMPA la Fábrica.

From hot sauce to cake pops, goat’s cheese to spring rolls, juice and smoothies to hand crafted beer, try new things or retaste old favourites while enjoying live music.

Saturday, 15th September
12 – 5pm
IMPA la Fábrica, 3rd Floor
Querandíes 4290, Almagro

St. Patrick’s Day in Buenos Aires

The ties between Ireland and Argentina are much closer and older than the trivial ethyl celebration of St. Patrick’s day, and the large Irish community in the country strives to keep the celebrations of the Irish saint’s day in the local calendar each year. Here are the most traditional Irish bars of Buenos Aires where to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day:

The Killkenny

Ciudad de Buenos Aires

The Clover
Av. de Mayo 1357 – Monserrat

Ciudad de Buenos Aires
4813-5332

Dubliners
Humboldt 2000 – Palermo
Ciudad de Buenos Aires

Also, in some countries the St. Patrick’s Day is not complete without a parade. This tradition arrived  to our country and for the past three years there is a parade that is part of the official celebrations.

This year’s event is organized by the Argentine Irish Association “William Brown”, the Government of the City of Buenos Aires and the Irish Embassy. The parade begins at 18:45 at the corner of Arroyo and Suipacha and ends at the Plaza San Martin with a music show (Pipers Tartan Army, The Kilt, Mac Manus, Mestizo Rock) and Irish dancing (Argentina Celtic group).

So, don’t be afraid, go green and celebrate St. Patrick’s day!

Did you know?

Back in 1864, Buenos Aires had only 140,000 inhabitants. One morning the Buenos Aires inhabitants found an intriguing surprise: the word “Hesperidin” was painted on the sidewalks of the city. During 2 months, the mysterious name continued to appear, and no one could guess the meaning of it.

On December 24, a vertical ad in the newspaper “La Tribuna”  finally unveiled the mistery, announcing the places where Hesperidin could be bought . The crowd rushed to all the shops and found out that it was a “bitter, prepared from orange peels.”

It was recorded as the 1st brand in Argentina because its creator, Melville Bagley, prompted the creation of the National Register of Patents. Quickly, this drink became very popular in all bars and cafes throughout the country.

This is the story of Hesperidin, an historic Argentine aperitif, with which several drink have been designed.
