St. Patrick’s Day in Buenos Aires

The ties between Ireland and Argentina are much closer and older than the trivial ethyl celebration of St. Patrick’s day, and the large Irish community in the country strives to keep the celebrations of the Irish saint’s day in the local calendar each year. Here are the most traditional Irish bars of Buenos Aires where to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day:

The Killkenny
Marcelo T. de Alvear 399 – Retiro
Ciudad de Buenos Aires
4312-7291

The Clover
Av. de Mayo 1357 – Monserrat
Ciudad de Buenos Aires
4342-9109

DownTown Matías
Echeverría 3195 – Belgrano
Ciudad de Buenos Aires
4545-1050

The Shamrock
Rodríguez Pena 1220 – Recoleta
Ciudad de Buenos Aires
4813-5332

Dubliners
Humboldt 2000 – Palermo
Ciudad de Buenos Aires
4771-6178

Also, in some countries the St. Patrick’s Day is not complete without a parade. This tradition arrived  to our country and for the past three years there is a parade that is part of the official celebrations.

This year’s event is organized by the Argentine Irish Association “William Brown”, the Government of the City of Buenos Aires and the Irish Embassy. The parade begins at 18:45 at the corner of Arroyo and Suipacha and ends at the Plaza San Martin with a music show (Pipers Tartan Army, The Kilt, Mac Manus, Mestizo Rock) and Irish dancing (Argentina Celtic group).

So, don’t be afraid, go green and celebrate St. Patrick’s day!

Rolling down BA: In line skating

In line skating (or rollerblading) is a different way of doing physical activity outdoors. Not only you can have fun, but you can also tone up your legs and improve your cardiovascular endurance. And in Buenos Aires there are several places to go and practice:

FreeStyleBA
They offer free roller slalom classes every Saturday at 4 pm at the Rose Garden of Palermo.

Moondiola
This group of skaters meet every Friday night in Puerto Madero and start skating down to Palermo. The tour also includes dinner at Costanera. If you’ve never skate at night before it is best to sign up for a daily tour.

Patin Day
This group meet every Saturday at 16 at the Hilton Hotel in Puerto Madero (Macacha Güemes to 300). The tour lasts approximately 2 hours and almost always ends in the Rose Garden of Palermo. Must be an intermediate level skater in order join.

There are no excuses: go around Buenos Aires and have fun!

Vintage Buenos Aires

Being in fashion means for many people looking at the latest trends and checking what to wear each season, but there is also another large group that has its own parameters, and identify with vintage or retro clothing as a style in itself. Finding stores where to buy the best vintage clothing, can be quite a challenge.

In Buenos Aires there are several shops and boutiques that sell retro or vintage clothing:

Juan Perez (Marcelo T de Alvear 1441) is one of the first shops of vintage clothing in Buenos Aires. The clothes are sorted by color in long racks and there is even a VIP section, where can find luxurious international brands clothing completely original.

Hidden in the Promenade Gallery, located in the charming neighborhood of Recoleta, there for ten years a place called Vintage BA (Av Alvear 1883 – Loc 30), an emblem regarding vintage clothing. But it has an interesting feature: clothing sold exclusively international brands from other seasons.

Hoy como ayer
(Thames 1925) is a small building that was born more than four years ago and is located at Palermo Soho.

More vintage shops in Buenos Aires:

Galeria 5ta Avenida: Avenida Santa Fe 1270 -Recoleta-
El baúl de Valentina : Godoy Cruz 2657 -Palermo-
El Buen orden:  Defensa 804 -San Telmo-

Three tips for buying vintage clothes:

  • Try on clothes, remember that there is no possibility to return them.
  • Check the garment from top to bottom, from the buttons to the zippers. If you find any damage this can help to fight the price.
  • Look for something according to your style.
